Little Bug Dress

A dress made out of thrifted curtains, boning channels, and wire.

The sheerness of the fabric speaks to transformations in the earth and of various creatures in different lights. The wing contrasts the dress with a beautifully careful, thoughtful and gentle movement born from the malleable wire.

Spring 2024

Artist Statement

The collection explores and celebrates queerness, play, and performances we have agency in. It pushes against binaries and constructs. I want to make art that makes people feel seen and celebrates fluidity and transformations.

All the materials are from the recycling center and/or thrifted. The fabric mostly came from bed sheets, and I love that that speaks to my intention as well––repurposing something, transforming it, allowing it to take on a new form. Nothing is static or set in stone––our existence, our identities etc.

Ideas and definitions of nature/what is natural have largely been manipulated to harm marginalized communities, but our connection to the land is sacred and we deserve to let the soft animals of our bodies love what we love (thank you, Mary Oliver). My garments connect to constructions that offer comfort (the lamp, the windowsill/curtain).

I wanted the flower necklace paired with the lamp as a twist on the needs of a plant––sun, water etc. That this lamp provides comfort and allows unexpected things to grow. The wire fishes overlay the fish made of fabric, and that to me also speaks to transformations––the glinting metal feels effervescent and full of potential. The fish and pigeon are important to me as symbols of mistreated and unappreciated creatures that hold a lot of connotations and histories, serving as parallels.

The photoshoot and preparation (as well as construction) added to the play and whimsy. It was really healing to be able to play and perform in this way. It was sweetness and fulfilling. Every version of myself smiles inside me.
